Two Weeks Old

I've just been out in the garage looking at our baby chicks.  (Again)  They are a never-ending source of entertainment.  These little babies are two weeks old today, and as you can see from this fresh-from-the-chick-lair photo - they are getting their feathers.  It's kind of funny really.  They go from these adorable little balls of fluff to sort of goony-looking birds almost overnight it seems.

The rather odd-looking yellow one on the right is a Turken, not part turkey at all, just named that for the bare neck.

I wish you could be here to see and hear for yourself.  Mr. Muddling is pretty sure I am a little bit off where chickens are concerned.  He doesn't see their attraction at all, but he is willing to let me indulge my fascination with them.

And in case you've ever wondered what the chickens outside see looking toward my sewing room (where I'm probably looking at them), this is their view.

On the sewing front, I have started quilting the "groovy" quilt.  I'm a little over a third of the way done.

I planted these coleus from seed in the spring and put them in pots all over the place.  I am so glad I did.  They have been a welcome spot of color all summer, and now into fall.

Not much growing out in the garden right now.  These are some mustard greens.  I don't know if my friends over the waters are familiar with these, but they are well-known in the southern part of the United States.  Traditionally they are boiled in water with ham hocks or fatback (This is a salty cured pork.)  I usually just steam them in the microwave.  This is another of those things that only I in this household will eat.  Mr. Muddling is pretty sure that most green things are deadly poisonous, and WON'T touch them!  LOL

I love this time of year.  The air is so fresh and cool.  You can almost feel the growing things slowing down for the winter rest.  I have all my doors and windows open to the cooler air, and I can see and hear the birds and the chickens going about their daily lives.  I'm watching a blue jay right now getting a drink of water right outside the sewing room window.

Hope your day is making you as happy as mine is making me!

Hugs and kisses,

Elaine, the chickens got so big in the 2 weeks. They are spoiled with the nice sheets. Cute quilt too!

Coleus is an endearing plant to me. Reminds me of my childhood as my Mom and I used to care for them together when I was just a little thing. Love seeing the progress on that fantastically happy quilt! And what a view for the Chickens. I do wonder so I'm glad you shared. It's important they see many happy things for their little chicken selves. It's very hard to be a chicken you know. Especially a cute Turken. I happen to love the little chickens and think you're so nice to share!

The sheets are actually quite old. We've used them for drop cloths when we painted, so they're not very nice. They do make good walls for the chicks though!

It sounds beautiful there Elaine! I don't think I'd get much sewing done if I had those cute little chicks to visit all the time!
