Sewing on a New Machine

New to me, that is.  I bought this machine a while back at the online Goodwill shop.  It's been sitting out in the garage patiently waiting for Mr. Muddling to bring it back to working order.  He did that this weekend!  What a pleasure this one is to sew on - smooth, quiet and the stitches are perfection.  It's a Singer 201, made in 1940.  There is a very informative article about this machine here.

There is just something about these very old machines that makes me happy.  For one thing, I am impressed that something 73 years old works so well!  There's hope for me.

As you can see there is quite a large pile of "units" to assemble into quilt blocks.

Here, some of them have grown into more churn dash blocks.  I'm hoping to get these assembled into a quilt for our bed, now that I have a frame big enough to accomodate it.

By the way, I had no idea who the Basic Math quilt should go to, but Mr. Muddling had told me that he wanted a quilt (or quilts!) to give away, too.  I told him he could give this one and he knew who it should be given to right away.  We did that yesterday and made one little lady very happy!

There was rain right before I got up this morning - not a lot, but refreshing to the landscape nonetheless.  I let the chickens out for a bit of a ramble.   They do love to see what's new.

I hope you have a wonderful week!  I think I'm going to go play with my new toy for a while.

Hugs and kisses,

Ditto for my featherweight. Smooth as silk. Good for you. Love the scrappy churn dashes, glad you are making more. Our chickens have started to lay. Yayy. I'm sick of store bought eggs.

Love your new machine.....hope for us all. I have recently worn my toe out, and I'm way too young for that. Your chooks look happy after rain. Mine are cold. I'll give them some new straw this week.

It is a delight to see these old machines working so well. They really do come from a time when things were made to last.

My mom gave me her old Singer (in a cabinet) back in the early 70's. She bought it when she and my dad married, back in 1945. I wish I had realized then what I had ... the cabinet needed refinishing, and it was old ... but alas, the allure of something new (and better - or so I thought) led me to a new machine ... and getting rid of the old Singer. How I wish I had kept it ... if only for sentimental reasons, now that my mom is gone.

I love the new machine mom.

I'm glad your quilt went to a good home. I'm sure she was glad to get it too. There's something very special about them....you constantly see new things you missed and thinking of how much time and care went into them.....is amazing:):):) I love all of mine.

My mother owned an old Singer sewing machine like this one. I like it very much. I'm sure you're having a great time sewing on it. I love the fabrics. I also like the photos of your lovely flowers, and the chickens. Have fun with your new toy.

Awe, brings back a lot of memories for me. My mom had one of those and I remember her teaching me how to sew when I was very young. I did fairly good for a small girl, just wish I'd learned more then I could make some of those beautiful quilts like that one.. Hugs, xo

Hi there - love your 201! I really don't know much about these great old machines, but I love every one I see. Yours is beautiful and looks to be in great shape. Since posting about my latest Singer (99-15) I've heard from several quilters who have them and love them as much as I do so I couldn't wait to see which ones they (and you) have. I just love seeing all the different vintage machines. So glad you stopped by to see mine and leave a comment so I could find your posts about your Singers. Have a great weekend!
